Good to Know about Bali’s International Airport when arriving

Bali Airport FAQ

The airport that you arrive when traveling to Bali is called Ngurah Rai International Airport /Bali.

The official Name is Bandar Udara I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali.

You might find websites such as flight booking sites where the name is slightly different or shortened such as Bandara International I Gusti Ngurah Rai Bali or Ngurah Rai International Airport.

And even though it’s the international airport, also the domestic terminal is located here.

The official Airport Code for Bali is DPS

The Bali Airport is located in the South West of Bali, near most of the top tourist destinations. It is located exactly between Kuta and Jimbaran.

It is not located in Denpasar (Bali’s capital).

bali map tourist destinations overview

Even though the Airport is often referred to as being the airport in Denpasar (DPS), the airport is located quite far away from the city, which is the capital of Bali, and not really a destination for international travelers to stay overnight. The nearest “towns” are Kuta/Tuban and Jimbaran.

Nusa Dua is reasonably near because it can be reached via a toll road that is built in the sea to reach this very popular 5 star resort area.

Seminyak is roughly one hour from the airport. To get to Canggu can take up to 1.5 hours, sometimes 2h.

South of Bali Map

If you want to spend a night near the airport choose Jimbaran (South of the Airport) or Tuban / Kuta (North of the Airport) – not Denpasar even though the name of the airport does suggest the city of Denpasar is close. It is not, and Denpasar is not really a destination worth staying for a tourist.

There are quite a few cheap accommodation options near the airport, not all of them are recommendable. We have selected a few decent options for you, that have good enough ratings and are very close to the airport.

Yes, after you have exited the main airport building (after customs) you will go through a corridor with several banks, money changers and ATM machines. Rates are ok.

No, there is no public transportation. While other popular tourist destinations and big cities often have metros, trains, public buses connecting the airport with the destinations, visitors to Bali have to rely on private transportation. This is true for the entire island not just the airport. And it can be quite chaotic at the airport when yuo arrive, we therefore strongly suggest you book your airport transfer in advance.

Reliable Airport transfer / Discounts available

Bali does not have a Car Rental section with all the international providers such as Hertz, Sixt, Alamo etc. This is because it is very uncommon to actually rent a car and drive on your own. It is much more comfortable and common to rent cars on a daily basis with a driver. Prices are very reasonable.
We do not advise to rent a car unless you are really familiar with driving in a country like Indonesia on a “small island”. Left hand driving, narrow roads, heavy traffic at times, somewhat chaotic style of driving with plenty of motor bikes pushing through every little space that’s available.

Bali Airport Taxis

Official Airport Taxis at Bali Airport DPS work with a fixed price list and the price depends on the area you want to go to. You can find the counter after you have left the building and exited through the duty free area just outside. Tell the person at the desk your destination or hotel name, then he will tell you the price and give you a ticket number or assign a driver.

Arguing the price they quote is of no use, if you feel that the price is too expensive or if you think your hotel is not in Seminyak, but in Legian.

You pay the driver at the end of the trip.

You need to pay CASH to the driver AFTER he dropped you. So if you plan to get a taxi, remember to change some money at the money changer just after you exited the customs area or withdraw some money at the ATM. Tipping is common but not a must.

Unless you have booked your pick-up an airport transfer beforehand there is no easy alternative. You CAN NOT get a metered taxi at the airport.

It can be a bit of a hassle to get a cab at the airport if you have not booked transfer service with your hotel. You will get asked by many “freelance” drivers that lure around the area, if you want their service. This can be overwhelming and not every driver will be giving you a fair price.
