Ubud, Bali — Long before Ubud became one of Asia’s most photographed destinations, a small restaurant on Jalan Raya Ubud was designed around a single view, the lotus pond of Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati. Forty-three years later, that view is still the reason people come. Opened in 1983, The Café Lotus has become one of the town’s most enduring dining venues, not because it has kept up with the times, but because it never tried to.

Much of Ubud has been rebuilt over the past four decades. The Café Lotus continues to operate the way its founders intended, as an open-air pavilion made to sit inside the landscape rather than stand out from it. Traditional split gates lead guests past hand-carved sandstone reliefs into a dining terrace shaded by ironwood beams and tropical greenery. The design borrows more from the temple next door than from anything commercial.

“Every element of The Café Lotus was built to celebrate Ubud, not to reinvent it,” says Wayan Sudiarta, General Manager of The Café Lotus. “The usual instinct in hospitality is to renovate every few years. We chose the opposite. Our job is to keep the frame steady, so guests can still see Ubud through it.”

The lotus at the centre of the pond is more than a name. In Balinese Hindu philosophy, it stands for purity, wisdom, and growth from difficult ground. Those same qualities shaped the identity of the restaurant, including its signature purple, drawn from the Balinese word metangi, which describes growing without losing your roots.

That patient approach has aged well. Each new generation of travellers, chefs, and photographers seems to rediscover the pavilion for themselves, often arriving with a museum in mind and finding a working restaurant instead, where classic Indonesian and Balinese dishes are served against one of Ubud’s most sacred backdrops.

The Sunday Sound Healing program begins on 5 July with a Floating Sound Healing session led by Lamia, followed by Sound Bath with Dian on 12 July, and another Floating Sound Healing session with Lamia on 19 July. The sessions are currently listed at IDR 500,000 per person, before 21% tax and service charge, with the same rate applied across all three Sundays. The Floating Sound Healing sessions on 5 and 19 July are limited to 8 spots, creating an intimate experience where guests are invited to surrender into sound, water, and stillness. Ubud, Bali — Tucked beside the sacred lotus pond of Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati, The Café Lotus has quietly grown from a modest local eatery into one of Ubud’s most enduring cultural dining destinations. More than four decades in, it remains a place where Balinese cuisine, traditional performance, and the unhurried spirit of old Ubud still feel genuinely at home.

The story begins in 1983, when Anak Agung Arimas, founder of The Café Lotus and wife of the King of Ubud, Tjokorda Gde Agung Suyasa, opened Warung Teratai, a small traditional restaurant and souvenir shop for travelers making their way through central Ubud. The village at that time was still largely untouched by tourism, shaped more by temple ceremonies, rice harvests, and the daily rhythm of Balinese life.

What made Warung Teratai memorable from the start was its sense of place. Sitting within the same cultural landscape as lotus ponds, carved stone gateways, and the gentle sounds of gamelan drifting through the streets, The Café Lotus was never just about the food. Guests arrived for a meal and stayed for the atmosphere, one that felt rooted in something real.

Balinese cuisine became the soul of the restaurant early on. Traditional recipes passed down through generations, local ingredients, and warm family hospitality gave it a distinct identity, while the view across the pond toward Pura Taman Kemuda Saraswati turned every meal into something a little more memorable.

By the 1990s, inspired by the lotus pond that had come to define its character, Warung Teratai had grown into The Café Lotus. The new name was less a rebranding than an acknowledgment of what the place had already become, a restaurant shaped by the beauty of its surroundings and the cultural life of the neighbourhood.

In 2005, The Café Lotus took things a step further by weaving live performance into the dining experience. With the restaurant’s stage facing the illuminated temple and lotus pond, guests could enjoy authentic Balinese cuisine while traditional dance and gamelan unfolded before them. It was an evening that did not feel staged. Food, heritage, and performance simply belonged together in that setting.

As Ubud’s profile grew on the world stage, The Café Lotus continued to evolve while holding onto what made it worth visiting in the first place. A full revitalization in 2025 brought renewed energy to the space, carefully done, with no compromise to the atmosphere, architecture, or cultural character that guests have known for decades.

Balinale 2026 is scheduled to take place from 1–7 June 2026, with Icon Bali Mall as the main hub, screenings at Cinema XXI, and selected venues across Sanur.

Road to Balinale 2026 is an evening of stories, cinema, and community by the sea, inviting Sanur into the festival journey before Balinale officially begins in June. More than a prelude, it reflects Sanur’s growing place as a cultural host where international cinema, local community, and creative exchange come together in a setting deeply rooted in Bali. Bringing together the Sanur community and invited guests from hospitality, media, arts, business, and cultural circles, the evening is intended to capture Balinale’s wider spirit of cultural connection and engagement through the world of film — where stories allow us to see life through different lenses, expand our understanding, and draw people closer across places, backgrounds, and experiences.

As Indonesia’s first and only Academy Award® Qualifying Festival, Balinale has strengthened its position as one of the country’s most important international cultural platforms. In 2024, the festival was officially approved as an Oscar® Qualifying Festival, creating a stronger pathway for filmmakers to gain international recognition through its short film competition.

That momentum has continued to grow. Balinale’s official materials state that the 2024 edition showcased 60 films from 25 countries, with 41 premieres. In 2025, the festival expanded further, presenting over 70 films from 32 countries, including 8 world premieres, 25 Asian premieres, and 16 international premieres, alongside 23 Indonesian films.
