Minister of Tourism, Sandiaga Uno, spoke about plans to issue a Visa for digital nomads

Mid of 2021, the minister already announced that the government is  working on a Visa for digital nomads that would also clarify their fiscal status and ensure, that they won’t be taxed in Indonesia for any income generated outside of Indonesia. 

Since then the government had to deal with the pandemic and regulations had been put in place, that put a total stop on tourism as we knew it, until a few months back, when the Indonesian government reinstated the Visa on Arrival for several countries and facilitated covid related travel restrictions.

The minister told Bloomberg Television’s Yvonne Man and Rishaad Salamat in the interview [quoted]:  “Now with the pandemic handled and all the ministries getting involved and cooperating from the health side to the immigrations office, we believe that this is an opportune time to relaunch this idea”…“In the past, the three S was: sun, sea and sand. We’re moving it to serenity, spirituality and sustainability. This way we’re getting better quality and better impact to the local economy,”

Digital Nomads need a Solution

This would be very great news for Bali and also for thousands of Digital nomads who are already living in Bali. Most of them staying here on a B211A Business Visa. However, this type of visas do not really legalise fully their stay here in Bali, because the purpose of the visa is not including “working for companies or clients abroad”. Also, as per current laws, anybody staying in Indonesia longer than 183 days over the course of 12 months, becomes technically a resident – and Residents are taxed on their global total income.
