Uluwatu & Pecatu – The place to surf and splurge
For the past few years, the area has been developing very rapidly with world-class beach clubs built on spectacular locations overlooking the endless Indian Ocean. Local food options are relatively limited in this area. Still, some nice little warungs cater mostly to tourists, as well as an increasing number of small restaurants serving high-quality international fare. You’ll find great cafes located nearby the beaches and main streets serving excellent coffee, smoothie bowls, and sandwiches. Excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner will usually cost you a pretty, but still affordable, penny and offer a variety of tastes.
Many beach clubs open till late every weekend. DJs from around the world are usually invited by the bigger clubs during the holiday season. Most of these places will charge you an entrance fee or have a minimum purchase policy, so you better ask in advance and make a reservation before your arrival. Age restriction and dress code policies may also be applied. For the less rowdy bunch, some humble cafes around the Uluwatu surf break have live music shows at night, meanwhile the bars in the area are always busy but tend to close early.

Galungan is one of the significant festivals celebrating the victory of dharma (virtue) over adharma (vice). It marks a ten-day period when the spirits of the ancestors are believed to visit the island. Balinese Hindu families will welcome the spirits with prayers and offerings. Dressed in traditional clothes, women balance on their heads the offerings made out of fruit and flowers, stacked up high and neatly in baskets. The streets are filled with the beautiful ‘penjor’, tall bamboo poles decorated with different patterns of woven palm leaves, while the lower base is a unique covered stand made to place some small offerings. The Galungan celebration will go on for ten days until Kuningan, the day when the spirits leave earth.

Rainbow Disco Club returns to Desa Potato Head on Friday, 25 April, and Saturday, 26 April.
The fourth in our ongoing collaboration sees Rainbow Disco Club take over Potato Head for two days and nights of hyper-eclectic sounds and sights, with some of Japan’s most renowned artists and a selection of global talents playing alongside our resident DJs. On Friday 25 April, Potato Head Beach Club plays host the the RDC stage, with Eris Drew & Octo Octa, Call Super. Archie B2B Gonno, Monkey Timers, and Munir B2B Varumi bringing their diverse musical textures to the shores of the Indian Ocean. Augmenting the music at the Beach Club will be laser and lighting from Yamachang, tsukemen style ramen from Tsubame, and special edition RDC merchandise.
The weekend event also includes a Klymax Discotheque takeover, with Rainbow Disco Club residents Sisi and Kikiorix joining Gonno in the booth on Friday night, before Chicago legend Ron Trent returns for an all night set on Saturday 26.
Japan’s Rainbow Disco Club is one of the world’s most respected and best-loved underground music festivals. With a borderless approach to culture, music, and genre, the event is revered for its inspired sonic curation, inclusive atmosphere, and multi-sensory production. Celebrating the primitive art of dance and human connection, the festival has become a benchmark for freeform musical exchange since launching back in 2010.

Kuningan marks the end of Galungan; the time when the ancestor spirits leave the island to return to their heavens above. Special offerings such as yellow rice are prepared (Kuningan is derived from the word kuning, which means yellow) and placed together with fruit and flowers in a small bowl made out of coconut leaves. The offerings stand as a symbol of gratitude for all that life has given in happiness, health and prosperity. It is believed that the ancestor spirits will ascend at midday and all special blessings and offerings should therefore take place before noon.

Event Details
Tumpek Uduh is important day in the Balinese Hindu calendar that is dedicated to agriculture, plants, and the environment. It is also known as Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Pengarah.
On this day, Balinese Hindus perform various rituals and ceremonies to show gratitude and respect for the plants and trees that provide food, medicine, and other resources, and to ask for their continued protection and abundance. The word ‘uduh’ means plants or vegetation, and the day is often referred to as the Balinese ‘plant blessing’ day.
The main ritual of Tumpek Uduh involves a special offering ceremony known as ‘mekendek’, where offerings of fruits, flowers, and rice are placed in front of plants and trees as a sign of gratitude and respect. This ceremony is often performed in fields and gardens, and is intended to ensure a good harvest and healthy growth of crops.
In addition to the offering ceremony, there are also other rituals that are performed, such as purification ceremonies, prayers, and blessings, to ensure the health and well-being of the plants and trees, and to honor the important role that they play in Balinese culture and society.
Overall, Tumpek Uduh is a day to celebrate and honor the natural environment, and to recognize the importance of plants and trees in providing for the needs of the community. It is a reminder to Balinese people to live in harmony with nature and to care for the environment in order to ensure the sustainability of their way of life.

Contrary to several other cultures all around the world that celebrate the New Year with sparkling festivities and ending the year with a bang, the Balinese New Year is a six-day celebration. One of the days is dedicated to complete silence – NYEPI, when the entire island comes to a standstill. With no scheduled incoming or outgoing flights from Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar (DPS). It’s indeed an exceptional experience, not only for the Balinese but also for all the visitors that are in Bali during Nyepi. If you are in Bali during Nyepi, make sure you do not plan any traveling or outside activities.
