Customs & Import Rules – Common Questions when arriving in Bali

Adult travelers may bring limited quantities of alcoholic beverages for personal use. The commonly stated allowance is up to 1 liter per passenger. Quantities above the allowance may be confiscated and destroyed by customs. Rules can be enforced strictly, so travelers should stay within the limit.

For personal use, travelers may bring limited amounts of tobacco products. Typical allowances include up to 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 100 grams of cut tobacco. If you carry multiple types of tobacco products, the allowance applies proportionally. Excess quantities may be confiscated.

E-cigarettes and vaping products are subject to specific quantity limits and excise rules. Both devices and liquids may need to be declared. Travelers should be aware that quantities beyond the permitted limits may be confiscated, and enforcement can vary.

If you carry IDR 100,000,000 (one hundred million rupiah) or more, or the equivalent in foreign currency, you are required to declare it to customs. Carrying very large amounts of foreign currency may require additional permission. Always declare honestly to avoid penalties.

Personal items purchased abroad that exceed Indonesia’s duty-free allowance may need to be declared. This can include electronics, luxury goods, or gifts. Customs duties and taxes may apply if the value exceeds the exemption threshold.

Small personal gifts are generally allowed. However, items in commercial quantities or with a high total value may be treated as non-personal imports and subject to duties, taxes, or restrictions.

Prohibited items include narcotics, illegal drugs, weapons, explosives, and certain restricted publications or materials. Bringing prohibited goods can result in severe penalties under Indonesian law.

Mobile phones, tablets, and similar devices purchased abroad may need to be reported to customs if they are intended for use on Indonesian cellular networks. Foreign visitors staying for a short period (generally under 90 days) are usually exempt from IMEI registration, but travelers should follow the instructions given on arrival.

Failure to declare required items or providing false information can result in fines, confiscation of goods, or other penalties. Customs enforcement can be strict, and honesty is strongly recommended.

Regulations and enforcement may change or vary at points of entry; this information reflects publicly available guidance at the time of writing, and Bali.com cannot be held liable for changes or decisions made by authorities on arrival.
