Bali is on WITA, Indonesia Central Time, UTC+8. The whole island uses one time zone and Indonesia has no daylight saving. So the gap between Bali and your city only changes when your own clocks change.

  • Time zone: WITA (Waktu Indonesia Tengah), UTC+8
  • Daylight saving: none, anywhere in Indonesia
  • Same time as: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, Hong Kong, Manila, Taipei, Beijing
  • Sunrise: 05:59 to 06:34, depending on the month
  • Sunset: 18:07 to 18:47, depending on the month
  • One island, one time: Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Jimbaran, Lovina and Gilimanuk are all the same

What time zone is Bali in?

Bali is within WITA, the Indonesia Central Time Zone, UTC+08:00. WITA stands for Waktu Indonesia Tengah, and it runs 8 hours ahead of UTC.

Indonesia has three time zones. Bali sits in the middle one, together with Lombok, Sulawesi and the eastern half of Kalimantan.

Zone Offset Covers
WIB, Waktu Indonesia Barat UTC+7 Jakarta, Java, Sumatra
WITA, Waktu Indonesia Tengah UTC+8 Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara
WIT, Waktu Indonesia Timur UTC+9 Maluku, Papua

Is Bali the same time as Jakarta?

No. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia but it does not share a time zone with Bali. Bali is one hour ahead of Jakarta.

This catches people out on domestic flights. A plane leaving Jakarta at 09:00 with two hours flying time lands in Bali at 12:00, not 11:00.

It matters for phone calls too. Immigration offices, airlines and government departments usually quote opening hours in Jakarta time.

Does Bali use daylight saving time?

No. Indonesia does not operate daylight saving time and there are no plans to introduce it.

Bali sits 8 degrees south of the equator, so there is little to gain from moving the clocks. Day length changes by about an hour across the whole year.

If the gap between your city and Bali shifts twice a year, that is your clocks moving, not ours. The table below works this out for you.

Is the time the same everywhere in Bali?

Yes. Bali has only one time zone. Denpasar, Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, Amed, Lovina and Gilimanuk all read the same clock.

Lombok and the Gili Islands are also WITA. The time only changes when you fly west to Java or east to Papua.

Why is sunset in Bali always around 6pm?

Bali lies 8.65 degrees south of the equator. This close to the middle of the planet, day length barely moves through the year.

The shortest day gives you 11 hours 37 minutes of daylight. The longest gives 12 hours 38 minutes. Across six months that is a difference of one hour. In London it is nine.

Time of year Sunrise Sunset Daylight
Late December, longest days 05:59 18:37 12h 38m
Late March 06:24 18:31 12h 07m
Late June, shortest days 06:33 18:10 11h 37m
Late September 06:12 18:15 12h 03m

Times are for Denpasar. Across the island the variation is under two minutes.

How fast does it get dark in Bali?

Fast. From sunset to full darkness takes around 22 minutes, roughly half what most Europeans expect.

Three things follow from that, and we plan around all of them.

Sunset dinners book out. Beach clubs in Seminyak and Canggu start filling from about 17:00 for a 18:15 sunset. Reserve ahead in high season.

Riding after dark comes quickly. If you are inland at a temple or waterfall, start back before sunset. Plenty of roads have no lighting at all.

Sunrise treks start in the night. Mount Batur climbs leave Ubud around 02:00 to reach the summit before 06:15.

If you plan to ride a scooter or drive here, you need an International Driving Permit for Bali. Police checks are routine and your insurance will not pay out without one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the time difference between Bali and Sydney?
Sydney is two hours ahead of Bali for most of the year and three hours ahead from early October to early April, when New South Wales is on daylight saving. Bali never changes. Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart follow the same pattern. Brisbane stays at two hours all year because Queensland does not use daylight saving.

What is the time difference between Bali and the UK?
Bali is eight hours ahead of the UK in winter and seven hours ahead during British Summer Time. When it is 09:00 in London in January, it is 17:00 in Bali. In July, 09:00 in London is 16:00 in Bali.

Is Bali the same time as Jakarta?
No, Bali is one hour ahead. Jakarta uses WIB at UTC+7 and Bali uses WITA at UTC+8. Check this before you book domestic flights or call an immigration office, because opening hours are normally given in Jakarta time.

What time does the sun set in Bali?
Sunset falls between 18:07 and 18:47, depending on the month. The earliest sunsets are in late June and the latest in late January. Sunrise runs between 05:59 and 06:34 over the same period. The widget above gives you today's exact times plus the next seven days.

Does Bali change the clocks in summer?
Bali does not change its clocks at any point in the year. Indonesia has no daylight saving time. The saying "spring forward, fall back" applies at home, not here, so any shift in the time difference comes from your side.

What time will it be in Bali when I land?
Take your departure time, add the flying hours, then add the time difference. A flight leaving Sydney at 10:00 in January with six hours flying time lands at about 13:00 Bali time, because Bali is three hours behind Sydney at that point in the year.
