Bali Passport Validity & Requirements: The 6-Month Entry Rule

Your passport is the most critical document for entering Indonesia. To avoid being denied boarding or immediate deportation, your passport must fulfill strict and non-negotiable legal requirements.

Note: Don’t forget getting familiar about VISA Requirements

That’s of course number one. If you you are a citizen that needs to have a Visa to travel to Bali, then this must be sorted out first.

The Non-Negotiable Rules: Passport Validity and Condition

Passport Validity: The Strict 6-Month Rule

Your passport must be valid for AT LEAST 6 MONTHS from your date of arrival in Indonesia (Bali). This rule is non-negotiable and strictly enforced.

If your passport is valid for 5 months and 30 days, entry will be denied. Airlines are mandated to check this during check-in, and they are required to deny you boarding if you do not meet the 6-month minimum, as they face heavy fines if you are sent back.

Passport Condition: Avoid Damage at All Costs

Immigration officers in Indonesia are increasingly strict about passport condition. Even minor damage can lead to issues or denial of entry.

  • Ripped Pages: Any torn or missing pages, especially those with stamps or identification details, will result in entry denial.
  • Water Damage/Stains: Significant water damage that blurs text, photos, or data chips (especially on the main bio page) will almost certainly lead to rejection.
  • Good Condition: Your passport must be in good, stable condition. Treat it with care during your trip.

Emergency and Temporary Passports are NOT Accepted for VoA

The official stance from the Indonesian Immigration Department is clear: holders of travel documents other than standard passports are not eligible to apply for a standard Visitor Visa (B1 Visa on Arrival).

” Holders of travel document other than passport (Laissez Passer, Titre de voyage, Travel Document, Document of Identity, Certificate of Identity, Alien Passport, Alien Travel Document, Emergency Travel Document, Emergency Passport; or Temporary Passport) are not eligible to apply Visitor Visa.”

REGUGEE DOCUMENTS:

This includes: Laissez Passer, Titre de voyage, Document of Identity, Certificate of Identity, Alien Passport, Alien Travel Document, Emergency Travel Document, or Temporary Passport.
Alternative for travelers with Laisser Passez documents:: If you hold one of these documents, you must apply for a specific C1 (formerly known as 211A) Visa in advance. (More information on alternative visas)

Minimum Requirement: One Empty Page

You must have at least one entirely blank page in your passport. This space is required for the arrival and departure stamps, as well as the Visa on Arrival sticker (if applicable).

While some travelers use electronic gates, immigration officers may still direct you to a manual counter, making the blank page necessary. So better have a passport that has at least one empty page in any case.

Machine-Readable Passport (MRP) Requirement

Yes. All foreign passports presented for entry into Indonesia **must be machine-readable** (MRP) and contain a valid photographic identifier. Older, handwritten, or non-MRP passports are generally not accepted for entry, even if they meet the 6-month validity rule.

Guidelines for Dual Citizenship

For entry into Indonesia, you must present the passport associated with the visa or entry method you used (e.g., if you applied for an e-Visa using your Australian passport, use that one).

Crucial Rule: Always ensure the passport you enter Indonesia with is the same passport you use to exit Indonesia. Using two different passports for entry and exit can lead to serious legal and administrative complications at the airport.
