Indonesia’s commitment to promoting its tourist villages (Desa Wisata) has once again been recognized on the global stage. Penglipuran Village in Bali has been awarded the prestigious Best Tourism Villages 2023 title by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
This accolade underscores the significance of these villages in rejuvenating Bali’s tourism sector and promoting culturally relevant and authentic tourism experiences.

As reported by The ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Minister Sandiaga Uno, stated during a session at the ministry’s Sapta Pesona Building in Jakarta. “It is with pride I announce today that the Penglipuran Bangli tourist village in Bali has become the Best Tourism Villages 2023,” he remarked.
The success of Penglipuran Village is not an isolated incident. Sandiaga highlighted the previous achievement of Nglanggeran Village in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, which received the same honor in 2021.
He also mentioned that three other villages are in the pipeline as contenders for upcoming international accolades. These include Bilibante Village in West Nusa Tenggara, Pela Village in East Kalimantan, and Taro Gianyar Village in Bali. All these villages are part of the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Upgrade Program.

Tjok Bagus Pemayun, the Head of the Bali Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, expressed gratitude for the ministry’s unwavering support.
“Because tourist villages in Bali have gone through the curation stage by the ministry. The results are now visible,” he stated.
