Balangan, on the Bukit, is a major lefthand reef break. There are fewer people here than at the other surrounding surf spots, but on a good day, it is an incredible big-wave spot with shifting peaks in Pecatu. Just a 30-minute drive south of the airport, through Jimbaran, you’ll pass a few five-star hotels in the area, as well as a ton of affordable surf camps.
Surfers of intermediate and advanced skill levels will love the beach’s consistent and lengthy left-hand waves with plenty of barrel time. Those still testing their skills may be found within the wall, while only experienced surfers are allowed on the outside. The ideal wave is brought by a south-west swell, measuring between one and four meters in height. While this location seems tranquil and attractive, booties are strongly suggested due to the presence of jagged coral reef in a few spots. From April and October is the best time to go. Expect crowds of mixed abilities during holiday or dry season.
