The performance opens with an instrumental created in 1993 called “Waves of the Ocean” – inspired by the sometimes calm and comforting and yet at other times the stormy waves. This 20-minute piece was composed for Gamelan Gong Kebyar, Bali Arts Festival by I Made Arnawa and Wayne Vitale. Followed by an elaborate welcome dance featuring lots of twirling umbrellas for protective symbolism and aesthetics; is performed by both male and female dancers. After less than 10 minutes War dance will show up, followed by the legendary Legong Supraba Duta of Mahabrata Epic and still, many more dances such as Taruna Jaya, Cendrawasih and Mask dance.
Here is the details of this show by Sekaa Gong Jaya Swara as one of the most famous sekaa (local musical and dance group/ community) known for their special main event dance Legong Supraba Duta of Mahabharata Epic. Visitor will enjoy at least eight performances during the entire show.
The show will be opened with Tabuh Ombak Ing Segara (Waves of the Oceans) an instrumental performance created on 1993 that played for about 20 minutes, inspired by the fluctuations of the waves which sometimes can be so calm and comforting and yet at other times it changes into wild waves. For your information, this composition was composed by I Made Arnawa and Wayne Vitale for a Gamelan Gong Kebyar competition that held on Bali Arts Festival. We can feel the fuse between traditional and contemporary style during the show.
The second performance is called Tedung Agung Dance (Welcome Dance), performed by male and female dancers. The male dancers will dance while moving their twirling umbrella that they use as the property, and the female dancers will use flowers as the element at this Tedung Agung Dance, which runs for about 10 minutes.
The third performance is called Baris dance; it is considered as one of the most important traditional Balinese dance and categorized as a war/ warrior dance. The dance show will be accompanied by gamelan, in which a solo dancer depicts the feelings of a young warrior before battle, glorifying the manhood of the triumphant Balinese warrior and displaying the sublimity of his commanding presence. Before turns into a dance show, it is used to be a religious ritual of blessing the warriors and their weapons during a temple feast. The dancer usually will carry a weapon like a keris, spear, bow, or other weapons, depend on the type of Baris dance performed. This dance will last for about 10 minutes.
Finally the main event of the show, The Legong Supraba Duta of Mahabharata Epic, a classic Balinese dance based on the great Hindu epic, Mahabharata. The whole performance are mainly tells us the story about the struggling of Arjuna to conquer the evil king Newata Kawaca by shooting an arrow into his tongue to heaven and earth safe and sound. This show will last for about 20 minutes.
After the magnificent performance of Legong dance, the spectators are going to be entertained by an instrumental show called Tabuh Angklung, that helps us to feel more relax and enjoy before continue to the next performance. This instrumental show will last for about 10 minutes.
Next performance will be Taruna Jaya Dance (The energy of Youth dance), Taruna Jaya dance is an expression of youth in Balinese life which shows.coyness, bashfulness, irritability, sweetness, and powerful energy. This duration of this dance show is about 10 minutes.
The seventh performance will be called Cendrawasih Dance. This dance tells about a beautiful bird from Papua that has brown and yellow feathers. This dance was created by a Balinese lady N.L.N. Swasthi Wijaya Badem for the festival held by Walter Spies Organization in 1988.
The show will be closed with the performance of Topeng Arsa Wijaya Dance (Dance of the Refined King), where the dancers are wearing topeng (mask) while telling us the story about the rivalry between the refined character and strong character.
