Indonesia Partners with Mayo Clinic To Build New International Hospital in Bali, Operational By Mid-2023
Dec 28th 2021
In a groundbreaking ceremony, President Joko Widodo announced Indonesia will be building a new international hospital in Bali through a partnership with Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit medical center based in the US. The hospital is predicted to start operating by mid-2023.
Bali is set to become a global medical tourism destination as part of Indonesia’s Post Covid Recovery Program in an effort to relieve the country’s struggles during the pandemic.
Beginning with targeting domestic consumers, as a record of two million Indonesians would rather seek medical treatment abroad in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and the US.
Upon losing 97 trillion Rupiah (USD$7 billion) from this, the initiative intends to redirect medical tourism domestically to the local healthcare sector.
Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno hopes that collaboration is possible with the Ministry of Health and from all involved parties regarding the plan to build an international-scale hospital in Bali.
The new facility will be based in Sanur, an area commonly visited by families and retirees. Bali already offers first-class healthcare treatments with international standard hospitals with supporting medical equipment and capable medical staff.
Coupled with the natural and cultural aspects that Bali is known for, this allows medical tourism to have great potential to be developed on the Island of the Gods.
By creating the new hospital in Bali, further creates job opportunities as well as local involvement with tourist villages. Ultimately, gaining back traction to the island after tourism dropped during the last couple of years.
First of three hospitals as part of the recovery program, Indonesia is looking to expand this program by building another international hospital in the capital city of Jakarta and Sumatra island’s largest city, Medan.
