Bali Hosting the World Hydropower Congress in Nusa Dua

Bali, Nusa Dua, 1st November, 2023

Bali, Indonesia’s renowned tourist destination, hosts the World Hydropower Congress. WHC is an event held by IHA every two years. This year, WHC will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from October 31 to November 2, 2023, with the theme Powering Sustainable Growth.

Hydropower’s Role in Shaping a Sustainable Energy Future

Sandiaga Uno, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, emphasized the significance of the congress.

He stated, “The World Hydropower Congress is an important event that can support the government’s program in achieving sustainable tourism through the use of renewable energy.”

In “The Weekly Brief With Sandiaga Uno” in Jakarta, Monday (10/16/2023), the minister said that the hydropower congress with the theme “Powering Sustainable Growth” is expected to be able to produce solutions and innovations in an effort to strengthen sustainable tourism and prioritize a green economy. There will be more than 1000 delegates and 175 high-level speakers from 120 countries attending the congress.

“This Congress gives us a message to respond quickly to the phenomenon of climate change. One of our efforts to prevent the impact of climate change is to utilize green and renewable energy,” said Sandiaga.

According to a Press release of Kemlo.go.id: Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif stated: “This congress is a flagship activity for policymakers inside and outside the hydropower industry to support energy security and achieve net zero emissions globally,” he said on the sidelines of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) meeting in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Saturday local time.

As quoted from his official statement, Tasrif said that the congress will generate high-level policy statements, recommendations, and commitments that impact the sustainable growth of hydropower globally.

He explained that WHC discusses efforts to promote renewable energy and the development of future industries through hydropower plants (PLTA), the handling of environmental and social issues, as well as the strengthening of climate resilience to tackle drought and flood.
