Strengthening Health & Wellness Tourism Program Towards Achieving Sustainable Bali Tourism

Bali – Indonesia

The WTN SUMMIT-TIME23 event, successfully held on September 28-29, 2023, has produced joint recommendations aimed at making Health & Wellness Tourism in Bali a gateway to opportunities in managing quality tourism that goes beyond mere rhetoric. This was stated by Mudi Astuti, Chairperson of the World Tourism Network Chapter Indonesia, in a press release on Monday (9/10/2023).

The successful WTN SUMMIT-TIME23 event was attended by three generations of industry representatives from 133 countries, constituting a network of experts in the global tourism sector. Some of these individuals have shown strong leadership as their country’s tourism ministers, and others represent international tourism organizations.

Mudi Astuti emphasized the importance of not misinterpreting the term “sustainability.” It is often derived from the concept of sustainable development, which encompasses cultural sustainability. However, the true meaning of sustainability consists of three  inseparable elements: community or economic prosperity, natural sustainability, and cultural sustainability. The three become a unity that cannot be separated.

“We must not misunderstand the use of the terms ‘Sustainable Tourism’ and ‘Quality Tourism’,” Mudi said.

Through public knowledge sharing via the media, it is essential to continually promote these ideas. The hope is that a paradigm shift will occur in the context of managing quality tourism, responsible tourism, and sustainable tourism for the better.

It is also expected that the Health & Wellness Tourism program can create favorable conditions in terms of carrying capacity—the number of people and tourists a destination can handle—while providing a more directed and holistic approach to ensure that Bali becomes a more comfortable destination.

WTN remains committed to providing input and advice regarding the current developments in Bali’s tourism industry and the organization’s efforts to shape a brighter future for Bali’s tourism sector.
