Kemenparekraf Appreciates WTN SUMMIT TIME 2023’s International Development of Medical and Wellness Tourism

Bali – Indonesia

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) has expressed appreciation for and welcomed the implementation of the WTN SUMMIT TIME 2023 Forum. This event is particularly significant for its focus on Health Tourism, specifically Medical and Wellness Tourism. These aspects are considered new and promising for Indonesia’s future development.

Vinsensius Jemadu, Deputy for Destination and Infrastructure Development at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, shared these thoughts during the WTN SUMMIT TIME 2023 event held at the Renaissance Resort & Spa in Uluwatu, Bali, on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

“The potential for Indonesia to develop Medical and Wellness Tourism is substantial,” noted Vinsensius Jemadu.

On the other hand, The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy observed that, for years, many Indonesians have been seeking medical and wellness services in Penang and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which Indonesia could have provided. This was due to President Joko Widodo’s creation of a Special Economic Zone (KEK) for Health Tourism in Sanur.

“It was specifically designed for Health Tourism, both in Medical and Wellness sectors. So, we see that Bali is a suitable location for developing health tourism, as it combines tourism and healthcare, aligning with the global trend post-Covid-19 pandemic,” he explained.

Vinsensius Jemadu also added that once the Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Sanur is completed, tourists can enjoy not only Medical and Wellness services but also the tourist attractions and destinations in Bali.

“We aim to develop this, and currently, the progress is at about 70-80 percent. Hopefully, it will be completed and inaugurated in February next year,” he said.

Furthermore, he expressed pride in having an international-standard Special Economic Zone in Sanur for Medical and Wellness Tourism.

Regarding challenges, Vinsensius Jemadu stated that there haven’t been significant issues so far, but one obstacle is promoting the Special Economic Zone (KEK), as many Indonesians still prefer Malaysia and Singapore for their Medical and Health Tourism needs.

Hence, efforts are being made to instill trust and confidence in Indonesia’s ability to develop Health Tourism.

“So, it’s crucial to intensify promotion and socialization. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Tourism must work hand in hand to continually publicize this,” he emphasized.

As for bringing doctors and healthcare experts or speakers to Bali, Vinsensius Jemadu mentioned that because Indonesia is not yet accustomed to developing Health Tourism, the government is striving to find the best solutions regarding supply and demand.

“If demand continues to rise, we must be ready to anticipate and welcome it, including through online platforms and other policies,” he concluded.
