President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to inaugurate the 10th World Water Forum, set to take place from May 18 to 25, 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali. Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, confirmed that preparations for the event are complete.

In addition, Luhut revealed that Jokowi and Elon Musk, who will also be attending the World Water Forum, will inaugurate the Starlink satellite-based internet service on Sunday, May 19. This service aims to provide internet access to all regions in Indonesia, particularly underserved areas, including disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost regions (3T).

“Elon Musk will also speak at the opening of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali,” Luhut added.

Starlink in Indonesia authorized

Starlink has received authorization to operate in Indonesia, providing direct internet access to end consumers, not merely as a business-to-business partner. This move marks a significant shift from previous reports suggesting a more limited role. In fact, Starlink is already being used by residents near Bandung.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) stated earlier, that Starlink has successfully passed the Operational Feasibility Test (Uji Laik Operasi, ULO). However, details regarding PT Starlink Indonesia’s management, office location, and customer service facilities remain scarce.

Luhut emphasized that Starlink’s presence could significantly reduce internet service inequality in Indonesia, a topic thoroughly discussed during the World Water Forum planning stages.
